Pier 17 Hands-On Frottage: Recording History
On December 30, 2008 over 30 people participated in a public art project creating a 10 x 11.5 foot graphite on paper rubbing of the wooden pier surface of Pier 17 Pavilion in the South Street Seaport Historic District in New York City.
Plans are underway to redevelop Pier 17. With permission from the management company General Growth Properties and generous support from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, this drawing encouraged the public to engage the Pier in a unique project while creating a visual record on paper of the wooden pier surface. In appreciation for the history of the original port of New York, this drawing attempted to preserve a part of that history.
